School sport and Education
MHS involves into schools since it was given permission by the Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture to coach and organise sport activities to school pupils around Mutare. We organise extramural school sports. That is we coach talented athletes. We organise also intra-school sport, a concept which includes the training of eager athletes. Activities are organised during school afternoon hours to get more children actively involved in sport.

Reasons of being into schools
In Zimbabwe, there is the belief of keeping children occupied after school hours so there is less chances of them getting involved in criminal activities. Strong physical activities, games and sport are essential components of any child’s education and socialisation. Children learn about their bodies and about each other in the sport field.
Sport leaders believe that through creating a broad foundation of sport participation in school participation in sports in Mutare will increase.

School Sport
Schools are one of the main focus areas for sport development. Most organizations that are concerned with sport development concentrate their activities on school. These are a platform for the development of community clubs. Mutare-Haarlem Sport Leaders Project is no exception in this.

For the sport leaders School sport is one of its key areas, all the sport leaders are expected to carry out some coaching activities in schools. Our aim is to encourage sport participation with the objective of turning schools into a pool of players for community clubs. We encourage sport leaders to form partnerships with schools and to link their clubs to the schools. The aim is to provide school leavers with a chance to participate in sports. This chance did not exist before since there were few community clubs to cater for school leavers.

Over the years sport leaders have been coaching in schools what has resulted in the identification and nurturing of talents. It has also resulted in the formation of clubs which have scored great successes in their disciplines. An example of this is the Mutare-Haarlem Athletics club which recruits athletes from schools. Other clubs which have been formed as a result of linking with schools are Hard Shots Handball Club, Legal Lions Handball Club, Dangamvura Queens Netball Club and Ajax Hotspur Football Club and many others.

The sport leaders have been able to form partnerships with schools were sport leaders are asked to assist in different sport disciplines.

Examples of Existing Partnerships:

Sport leaders are assisting in more than 25 schools in Mutare, which include 10 Secondary Schools and 12 Primary Schools. As a result of coaching in Schools sport leaders have been asked to assist in coaching the Manicaland Youth Games teams which have played very well including winning a Gold medal in Handball in the 2005 edition.
